Warning!! Is your vehicle laid up?
Insure it or SORN it?
To reduce the number of uninsured drivers on our roads the Department of Transport has launched Continuous Insurance Enforcement.
What does this mean?
It means that all vehicle owners will either need to prove they have insurance, declare the vehicle SORN (Statutory Off Road Notification) or purchase insurance cover for vehicles currently not insured. For instance, if you have a classic car tucked away in your garage, that is only insured and used for a few months in the summer, or a motorbike you are lovingly restoring you still have to insure it all year round.
What will happen if I don’t comply?
Stiff penalties, court prosecution and the risk of losing your vehicle. Initially, an Insurance Advisory Letter (IAL) will be issued, informing you there’s a risk of prosecution if you do not take out insurance. If you ignore this, a £100 Fixed Penalty will be issued and if you still take no action, there is the risk of your car being clamped. Or, worse still, it could be seized and crushed.
The most severe penalty is a court prosecution. Here, people who still refuse to take out insurance risk a court appearance and a fine of up to £1,000. As a result registered keepers now have only two courses of action: take out insurance, or declare the vehicle off road.
